Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic. It is rarely used for treating bacterial infections mainly do to its toxic side affects. It is has been banned in the US and Europe in feed for food producing animals because of the toxicity of the substance, and it will be present in the milk from dairy cattle if their feed is supplemeted with it. Chloramphenicol is also a suspected carcinogen.
