I would have to strongly disagree with Mr Peeper. I served in the Corps from 94-98. I joined the Corps to serve this country, and did my duty, receiving an Honorable Discharge for my time in. Now, those times in this country were reletively peaceful. My Father did almost 30 years in the Army, went to Panama, Desert Storm, and also another year this go around in Iraq, just before he retired. And, I know for a fact, he considers me just as much a veteran as he is.

There is honor in being a veteran. It is the honor of serving this country, and the willingness to defend it when the time arrises. If you happen to serve in a time where there is reletive peace, you duty is not less honorable.

Now, do I consider myslf on the same level as my father, or my uncle who went to Vietnam, and my grandfathers who went to Korea and WWII. No, they were in there, where the metal meets the meat. But, we are all veterans. We served this country.

All who serve are veterans for serving this country. Circumstances and politics determines who sees action, and who doesn't.

I was sworm in to serve in the army infantry. During World War Two I was in the front lines all the way to Chechoslovakia. Right down in the mud and blood every inch of the way.
Others in other branches of service were so far back that they never say an armed German, were never shot at,slept in comfort, ate very well, were able to bathe- - - all the things that we dreamed about.
They were soldiers too. Sometimes it's the hand you draw. Some wanted action and got it, some didn't want any part of the killing, but got it anyway. As for me, I never wanted to miss a good fight - - - - and didn't.

Your question for military service has already been answered. If you were asking as to what qualifies as a veteran, then you also already have your answer. However, when most people think of a veteran, simply serving in peacetime isn't the image people conjure up. I personally consider anyone in the military as having done military service, but only the people who fight and the people who directly support them should specifically be called a veteran.

Military service is serving in the military, regardless of the job.
