What is Female Genital Cutting?
The term FGC refers to several different forms of cutting. Infibulation, the most severe, involves the removal of all or part of the external genitalia, leaving only a small opening for urine and menstruation. The cutting usually takes place between the ages of 4 and 12.
Despite complications that can include severe hemorrhaging, infection, long-term difficulties with intercourse and childbirth, and even death, many communities see FGC as part of their cultural heritage and a valued rite of passage. Both men and women sanction the practice as a way to ensure a girl's virginity before marriage, fulfill a religious obligation and maintain their cultural identity.
Read about it at the link below, and make your own decision. Why does the U.S. or the UN need to be involved?

I seen a program on this subject one time...that's a nasty thing their doing to those young girls. I personally don't see the need for it. It's a dangerous practise that should be stopped. Maybe it would be a good idea if the U.N. got involved with this matter...if their not already. I don't hear a lot about female circumcisions. I've only seen one show about this, and that was back years ago.

This is an international problem, so it should be addressed by an international organization. The U.N. is the appropriate body to do this. As one responder has already pointed out, the U.S. sticks its nose in everybody's business, but that doesn't make it right, nor wise for that matter. We are but one nation out of hundreds on earth. Our opinion should carry no more weight than that of other countries. It's the collective world opinion which matters.

Absolutely! We stick our nose in everything else so why not this especially since it's such a cruel thing to do. I don't think it should be done but since it is why don't they do it in infancy like we do with males instead of waiting till puberty?

Something definitely needs to be done about the sick rituals. Perhaps the real reason is because of the fact that it's African women dying, and the US and UN only care about European tragedies.
