Medical literature generally agrees that Paxil, Zoloft, Remeron and Luvox appear to cause the most weight gain, with Prozac and Welbutrin sometimes causing weight decrease. However, many people still gain weight with any of the classes of antidepressant drugs. Rule of thumb: The higher the dosage of medication, the more likely weight gain will be an issue. Of course, this is not the case for every woman, and you should consult your own doctor about the side effects of any medication.

I would talk to your doctor first. Each person is different and their bodies react differently. Get a psychiatrist because they know the drugs the best and will track you better. I started off with Celexa-generic is citalopram or something like that. I haven't gained any weight. I am also on that with Welbutrin for anxiety and have not gained weight. My only side effect is getting sleepy about 30 min after I take my medicine, so I just take them at night. Once I tried Cymbalta and it made me really sick-like I had the flu really bad. It is kind of trial and error. If weight gain is a concern make sure to mention it, I did. Good luck!

I was on all of them, because none of them worked and the side effects were so horrible my doctors kept switching them, I have been medication free for about a year and still am suffering some residual side effects called P.A.N.E.S. and still losing the weight that these medications caused, over a hundred pounds from before I was prescibed this type of medication.

i was on lexapro for almost a year when i was 15. it helped me a lot, that's why i was taken off of it so quick. here's a site with Q&A about lexapro.

http://www.lexapro.com/english/faq/default.aspx

the part that may help you is this about side effects...
Lexapro is well tolerated by most people. The most commonly reported side effects of Lexapro are nausea, insomnia, problems with ejaculation, somnolence, increased sweating, fatigue, decreased libido, and anorgasmia. Most of the side effects experienced by patients taking Lexapro are mild to moderate and go away with continued treatment, and usually do not cause patients to stop taking Lexapro.

when i took it i didn't have any long-term problems that were caused by it. for the first few days i had a stomachache after i took it, but they only lasted about 15 minutes, and i already had insomnia before i took it, but that's it. lexapro didn't do anything but make me feel better. i highly recommend it too! good luck and i hope you feel better soon!

Lexapro. It is a newer medication. I went on it for postpartum depression and had no side effects what so ever. It is a fast acting med. I have known a lot of people who gained on Zoloft, paxil and Prozac. You could also ask about wellbutrin.

They ALL have side effects and they all cause weight gain...

I honestly believe that it is because they don't want people with mental illness breeding into the "Normal" gene pool. It is population control like when they use salt peter in the food in prison to keep down the sex drive...

Funny how almost all of them cause weight gain AND low sex drive huh?

Something for you to chew on! You don't need that crap! Go to a therapist and heal yourself. Don't sugar coat the problem and medicate it. Get rid of it with cognitive, intentional work on yourself and therapy!

Try journal work and marking down your triggers, your feelings and your results. Sometimes it is just a matter of bringing what has recessed itself into a subconscience state of habit and bring it back to your conscience understanding. Realization, honesty and a willingness to work on yourself is the cure... Not medication! Medication is for the severly mentally ill and for those who refuse to be proactive in their own treatment and have given up...

Which is the exact reason I believe that doctors have given up trying... I can't tell youhow many of them I have actually heard say out loud. "These people WANT to be nuts." I believe in some cases... That is true. Some people depend on meds and never actually want to get better...

I h onestly don't know much about Cymbalta because it is so new but the ONLY one that I know of that has neither weight gain issues or sex drive issues is Strattera... But that is not for depression. It is for ADHD

I gained weight like it was going out of style while I tried Paxil. I don't know that everyone has that effect, though.
