Mmmmm. From my experience. I would say that it is important to eat fruit and veg and substantial food in general. Eating good food will not make you feel all that better though if there are issues that are bothering you that haven't been addressed. It's a bit of both. Also, eating bad food is probably not as bad for you as drinking too much or doing drugs. Sugary foods may make you feel a bit run down physically, but you have to understand what it is inside that is causing the majority of the problem. Once I quit drinking and started eating really healthily for about a month in a bid to ease stress/anxiety etc but it did little for me. The reason being was because I ignored an emotional issue and thought that physical factors would solve it. Having a couple of pints was acrually healthier for me because it made me express myself easier so it's swings and roundabouts. You have to understand what is REALLY causing the problem in your mind/body. If you already understand it, you have to ADMIT it. Good Luck!

As long as you are not manic or Bi Polar. The over the counter drug called Sam-e is a natural alternative to the prescription medications. Try it... It is awesome! NO SIDE EFFECTS! *See link below...
Or...
Anything with an energy base (sugar & Lemon) but yet maintains a sedative, calming effect... (Lavender.) The lavender counteracts the eventual sugar or caffene crash experience.
Try this...
Lavender Lemonade...
6 large lemons scrubbed clean of wax coating in warm water...
Water
a heavy bottomed pot
a huge handfull of dried lavender flower. (You can get it in the bulk herb and spice section of your health food store.)
Sugar to taste.
Peel the yellow off the lemons (do not get any of the white pith.)
Slightly char them in a dry, heated pan until they release their oils and begin to brown slightly. (DO NOT BURN!)
Toss in the Lavender buds after removing the pan from the heat but while it is still hot. (They will burn Fast so be careful!)
Add 1 cup of water and melt in the the sugar.
Steep or simmer this on low heat for about 30 minutes (Do not boil!)
Juice the remaining skinned lemons into the pot
add water to taste. (This is different every time you make it so you add the water to dilute it to your own taste, same with the sugar.)
Strain this into another pot or container through a fine mesh strainer or some cheesecloth.
Add ice in a glass or refridgerate and enjoy!
Garnish with a sprig of mint.
Lemons and sugar create energy and lavender keeps it from being nervous energy more like a calming energy.
***Be careful using this if you are allergic to botanicals. It can cause headaches if you are not used to consuming flowers and herbs. Try a little at a time to see how it will effect you?

Chocolate can be very good for you, as long as its not a huge quantity! If you're always eating chocolate, then give it a rest. Fresh fruit is always good for us, depressed or not. As a general rule: A little bit of what you fancy, does you good.
Sometimes anxiety/depression can bring on no interest in food, but do eat little and often.

Best - five small meals a day rather then three large meals... with plenty of fruit and veg. Good intake of water and avoid caffeine. Herbal teas are good though need to watch some if on meds.
Worst - foods with a high sugar or salt content.

Best - a healthy, varied diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Traditional meals - meat, potatoes and veg.
Worst - high fat, high sugar foods. Its best to maintain a steady blood sugar level, so snacking on chocolate is a bad idea.

Chocolate is a good endorphin-booster (in moderation, of course)
But stay off the booze - it will react badly to any medication you are taking and has a depressive effect on the chemicals in the brain.
In the end, a lot of beer will just make things harder for you and prolong your symptoms.

Best foods are low in sugar, but are not heavy. Specifically, grains and wheats. Wheat bread, a bagel, rolls, etc. Carbs without assisted sugar first bring the body up, and then relax the body.

No matter what food you eat, you should always eat in moderation. Some people become overweight because they turn to food for comfort, and that's not good.

Fish is good, omega 3 is proven to be good for mental health. Fresh veg, fruit etc -
bad, anything that gives you an instant rush then makes you crash after, i.e. carbs, sugar, caffeine -
don't deny yourself things you like though, just have it all in moderation.
feel better.
