because there are several childhood diseases that a regular doctor is not trained to identify and also especily with babies, since they can't talk, it's much more difficult to identify the problem.

CHildren could go to a regular doctor, but many children have fears of doctors and shots and people at a pediatricians office are able to accomodate children adn their fears. At a regular doctors office they are used to dealing with adults, and the kinds of problems that effect them such as heart disease and osteoperosis and whatever else effects those that are older. Children have different issues they see doctors for, including their development. A pediatrician is trained specifically in children's health. Wouldn't you rather your kid go to a doctor that was trained to deal with people especially like your children ?

pediatrician's know more about children because they specialize in their health and diseases. a regular doctor could take care of children, but if you want what's best for your child then you should take them to the pediatrician. i also found this on a website....

Because family practitioners spend portions of their training becoming well versed in multiple specialties, they are not as expert at pediatrics as pediatricians, but they are well qualified to provide routine pediatric care and to deal with most usual childhood illnesses. Lets not forget that many of the common problems we see doctors for are similar in children and adults, and those family practitioners who have experience with children know how the treatment of children differs. In addition, a family practitioner who is caring for the whole family has the added benefit of familiarity with family factors affecting the child. In those situations where a child's condition may require the expertise of a pediatrician, the family practitioner can consult with and refer the child to a pediatrician just as the pediatrician consults and refers to other specialists when needed.
Beyond training, expertise is a matter of experience. If you live in an area where there is a shortage of pediatricians, then the family practitioners will have lots of experience treating kids. You should have no qualms about having your child cared for by a family practitioner.

good luck and i know you'll make a wise decision!

My kids go to a regular doctor. I think pedatricians are over paid and over glorified. My oldest daughter (who is 7 now) was born with hip dysplasia. We didnt now what was wrong at first, we just knew she was walking with a limp. By the time she turned 4 I had taken her to over 10 different pedatricians. Then one day I had enough, and I called and made her an appointment with my doctor, a regular family doctor, and he discovered what was wrong. She has since been though 3 surgeries, 7 weeks in a full body cast, had to learn to walk all over again twice, and will be plagued with sore hip and knee joints the rest of her life. The surgeon told us had they pin pointed her problem with in the first 18 months of her life, she could have undergone a somewhat simple treatment and never would have faced those surgeries. All 3 of my children now see my family doctor, and I will never again set foot in a pedatricians office. Ultimately it is up to the parents (and maybe insurance company) on what type of doctor your child sees.

Children don't have to go to a pediatrician. Women don't have to go to a GYN, etc.

These are choices that people make, but a general practitioner, AKA family doctor, AKA primary care physician can care for the the whole of the family, and will make referrals to specialists when necessary.

What the hell is wrong w/ you? I looked at your profile and you seem to have unresolved issues or something involving children. I really hope you don't have any. Oh, and children are different from adults, that is why they go to pediatricians. Pediatricians are specially trained to work on children. You should seek therapy.

A regular doctor or knows a little about a lot of ailments. they are qualified to diagnose most things but when they are faced with something really serious they can refer you to a specialist, who knows A LOT about a particular type of ailment. a pediatrician is a specialist for children. they know A LOT about kids and things that relate to kids. I'm sure you could choose to take your child to a regular Dr. but I think children are in better hands with a pediatrician.

Pediatricians are more schooled in recognizing illnesses and conditions that specifically affect young children. They are also able to monitor development to a certain degree, and ensure that the child is progressing normally. It's no different than a mechanic being a transmission specialist. Everybody specializes in something.

My kids see a family doctor- because I am thouroughly satisfied with his capabilities. This man should have been a pediatrician, he is great with the kids. That's what matters. If you have a family doctor you trust, take your kids to him. Otherwise, picking from pediatricians may slightly increase your chances of picking one who is good with kids.

Simply put, children are still developeing and they requier doctors who specialize in the many different levels of development which they may incounter, as well as different deseases and disorders, and GP can focus ion adult issues.

In fact, they can visit a GP, you just need to get your doctor to approve.
