I live in Philadelphia and want to try my luck at panning for gold. Can anyone tell me the best places to go within a half hour's driving distance?

The closest place to you to pan for gold is here in north Georgia. The first gold rush in the U.S. was here. However, there are traces of gold found all through the Appalachians. Check with some Yahoo groups on Gold panning and someone just may have place they could recommend.

Try anywhere around the Susquehanna River. Gold followed the Glacier movement.....The river was created by a glacier. Don't go into the clay, stay around then bends and close to the banks. If it is there, you will find it withing 1 inch of the topsoil.....don't expect to find it the first day, remember, gold digging takes time and effort. Good luck to you.

There are areas just outside of Philadelphia that aren't scary or dangerous where you can find a home for around 140,000. They're called the "trolley-car suburbs" (the old, still functioning trolleys of SEPTA still serve these neighborhoods) in Delaware County...just south and west of the city. Upper Darby, Collingdale and Sharon Hill are examples of the towns there. Good luck!

Jewelry store dumpsters might be your best bet within 30 minutes of Philly.
