Keep in mind that dogs are domesticated wild animals, and in the wild they would eat their entire prey, not just the meat, but also the organs and bones and stuff too. So what would be the best healthiest dog food?

Why is it that no one mentions vitamin and mineral contents, or the digestability of the products in the foods?

You definately have some good tips in here. Stay away from Pedigree, Purina, Iams, Science Diet, Ol'Roy, things that have corn as the first ingregient or as an ingredient at all!!!

corn is nothing but a filler, the more corn the cheaper the food and the more poop your dog will poop, have bad coat and skin, etc...

Several people have listed some excellent high quality foods, but if you are on a buget, you can still get a excellent or holistic food Nutro offers it's Natural line (which I personally feed) there is no corn or wheat. for a 20lb I pay $16 or so. Also they have a holistic line called Ultra, it costs just a tad more.. You can look up their food, ingredients, where to buy, etc at www.nutroproducts.com

If I could afford it, I would go with Canidae, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul, etc....

There are actually lots of websites that have compared ingredients of all different types of food.

There are many good dog foods out there. Purina, Pedigree, and even Science Diet (which you get from the vet) are all bad foods. The reason for this is because of the ingredients. The first three ingredients should be two meats (or a meat and a meat meal).

Here are the first three ingredients in Science Diet puppy food: Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Soybean Meal (directly from their website)

Corn and soy are two of the top causes for digestive issues in dogs with sensitive stomachs. Also, soy can cause dogs to have terrible gas!

Wellness a high quality dog food, for example has deboned chicken, chicken meal, and oatmeal as the first three ingredients in their puppy food. See the difference?

Look at the ingredients and you will be able to fine a good food for your dog.

Unlike what some others have posted Purina and Pedigree are garbage. Mostly fillers and animal byproducts (hoofs, tails, all that fun stuff). Look at the ingredients...if the first things are corn meal or some type of by-product, it's just crap. Natural Balance, Castor and Pollux, and Royal Canin get my vote. They contain actual food, not scraps left over from god only knows what or filled with mystery chemicals, preservatives, and dyes.

I prefer Science Diet Nature's Best. The dogs were on it when I adopted them from the Humane Society, the vet recommends it, I've had dogs live long happy lives using this product, and my dogs have all digested it well. Those who claim that it will give dogs HORRIBLE gas are basing their opinions on what? One dog out of how many? My dogs have all done well. The only gas problem in my house comes from my husband.

For those of you promoting Diamond...especially those of you who claim it contains no corn...

"In 2005 Diamond Pet Foods, a US pet food manufacturer, experienced a significant rise in the number of corn shipments containing elevated levels of aflatoxin. This mold toxin eventually made it into the pet food supply, and dozens of dogs died before the food could be recalled."

Raw diet. I could go on and on this subject. But if you can't afford Raw. There are some reputable kibbles out there too. Timberwolf Oranics, Wellness, Canidea, Solid Gold, Innova, Chicken Soup, Flint River Ranch to name a few.

The best dog food is the one that works for your dog, your dog will eat, and is the highest quality for what you can afford.

I have personally fed my dog Regal Puppy, Innova, California Natural, and Canidae. These foods work for my dog, he loves to eat them, and they are the highest quality that my budget for dog food can afford.

I'd suggest checking out http://www.dogfoodproject.com/

I'm also not against feeding a raw diet, but don't have the facilites to do so currently. And this isn't something you can undertake without lots and lots of research. If you're interested in feeding a raw diet, my favorite website for that is http://www.rawdogranch.com/

sure they were once wild...but not anymore, so it is no longer a factor. Take the dog and it's needs into consideration and perhaps try asking a vet. All dogs breeds are different so have different needs, so it is impossible to name one kind for all.

Nutro Max, Diamond, California Naturals, Royal Canin, Innova......

Supermarket dog food is full of by-products and toxic preservatives.

**If you think your dog food is good for your pooch, then please make sure it doesn't contain any chemical preservatives—no BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, propyl gallate or any meat-by products. These ingredients will negatively effect your dog.

Canadiae is the best. It has human grade food in it with no corn!!! Corn is a filler and the dog just poops it out.

Dogs dont like overalls,
I recommend some soft dog food, some biscuits, some left overs and if you are a hunter, the left over inside bits.
