I have a cat that has had a major change in her mood. She is about 8 years old and she has become very nasty. She bats at me all the time and hissing at everyone including her old playmate which in another cat. What would bring on her sudden mood change. I have them both in for a complete physical a few months back and all is well with them.

When the doctor did the complete physical, did he or she run senior cat blood tests and check your cat's thyroid level? Hyperthyroid is common in older cats, and can have a dramatic affect on the cat's personality. If your vet didn't check your cat's thyroid levels, it would be a good idea to take your cat back in and get them checked - have the vet do a 'senior' or 'geriatric' cat blood profile.

It's also possible that something else may be going wrong with your cat that wasn't detectable a few months ago. It wouldn't hurt to get another full checkup - cats are usually very good at hiding pain, and may strike out to hide their vulnerability. Dental problems, for one, can develop pretty quickly, and can be painful.

Another possibility: Could a stray cat be coming around your house and upsetting your cat? Sometimes if a cat sees a strange cat through the window, it will redirect the aggression it feels toward the stranger against its housemates that are within reach. Try putting cat repellant spray or granules outside around your windows and doors to keep strays away. A Feliway plug-in diffuser from the pet store may help calm your cat down too, helping her feel more safe and relaxed.

Has their been a recent change in the house? A new addition? Did you move something of her's or replace something? Cat's don't really like change and she could just be resenting you if something has changed in her life. Just be nice to her, pet her, show her some love and hopefuly she'll come around. Cats are really weird when it comes to their personalities. My cat was timid and scared of every single thing when we first got him, but now he is so attached to me I can't even take a shower without him meowing at the top of his lungs! LOL

Has she been immunized for distemper? You should probably call the vet. it may be a condition that came on suddenly. Maybe she's in pain or uncomfortable in some way.
