I have a laserdisc player that was a Christmas gift in the 90's. It is Marantz brand. It's always worked well. I was just curious if Marantz is in general a high quality brand like Pioneer since I hadn't heard of it before.

in the audio world Marantz is considered slightly better than Pioneer.
The common Brands most people know, like Pioneer, Sony, Onkyo, Yamaha, Kenwood, etc are considered "Mid-Fi" by audiophiles. Some Marantz equipment is nice and a half step ahead.

Yes, they had been around for years making high-end equipment. Cannot swear for their latest offerings however for the consumer driven market, where they have a hard time competing with the Panasonics of the electronics world.
