If you wanted something in the about Baht1,000 range, near the other main shopping places (as well as being near to MBK) you could look at Bangkok City Inn, Samran Place, First Hotel and The Residence Rajtaevee.
These are also near to Pantip Plaza, Pratunam Market, Central World Plaza, Gaysorn, Central Department Store Chit Lom, Siam Paragon Mall, Siam Discovery Mall, Siam Square and Siam Center Mall.

Then you need to stay in downtown area, around Sukhumvit, Ploenchit, Rajprasong, Siam Square, etc. There are hundred of hotels from 2 stars to 5 stars along Sukhumvit Road. I suggest you to search the net for hotels around Sukhumvit area or near a ny BTS Sky Train Stations. BTS Sky train connects outbound area to the inner city. The ones that I can think of on top of my head are Amari Watergate Hotel, Pathumwan Princess Hotel, Swissotel, Novotel Siam Square, and Siam @ Siam Hotel. These hotels locate near BTS stations and are surrounded by good shopping malls and shopping areas. The room rate is around Baht 2500 - 3500.
For shopping malls, areas in Thailand:
Upscale and brand-name products- Siam Paragorn, Central Department Store, Kaysorn Plaza, Emporium, etc.
For wholesales clothes - Pratunam (Watergate) or Bobae
For IT stuffs - Panthip Plaza (Pratunam)
For jewelry - Charoen Krung, Silom
For garments - Pahuraj (Indian Town)
For wholesales acessories and giftshop - Sampeng
The hotels I listed above are closer to or easy to get to these areas.
