In Oklahoma they have to be 5 by September 1st to enter kindergarten. The nice thing though is that Oklahoma has a great preschool program so my son is attending preschool this year (free) until he is olld enough next year for kindergarten. He had his 5th birthday at the end of November. The part I don't like is that I just had another baby boy on Sept 7th - so he missed the kindergarten cutoff by only a week! I think they should have a readiness test for those children who miss the cutoff by less than a month, to give them the option of preschool OR kindergarten if they are mature enough.

Where I am, a child has to be 5 by January 1st 2007 to have been able to start September, 2006. A child can actually be 4 for a few months in Kindergarten in this case. This may not be true of all districts in my state though.

You need to be 5 by the end of December of that school year to enter kindergarten in Connecticut.

I've always believed that the child should be 5 in the school year not the calendar year. From August to July should be the time they look at for ages. It would put children at a much better advantage all around.

I have two children born in Feb/Mar who are older and more advanced than the children who are younger but in the same grade. I know I'm not the only one with children like this.

My opinion though.

In Ontario, if a child turns 4 by the end of the year, they can start Junior Kindergarten in September. For Senior Kindergarten they have to be 5 by the end of the year. JK is not mandatory, but SK is.

In my county your child's birthday must be no later than 9/30 and must turn 5 on or before that date the year they go to kindergarten. This is true too, of the preschools that they can attend.
