Was that on April 1st by any chance?

There are no fighter in the world with the range to go from Iraq (Baghdad) to New York, it is more than 9600 km (6000 miles), while fighters typically have a range of less than 2000 miles. There are actually few airliners models capable of doing it.
And in flight refueling is definitely out of the question.

An Iraqi fighter may have landed on a US base in the area, but New York is totally out of range.

It's impossible, imagine that also fighters from europe that are redeployed in Goose Bay(Canada) need a tanker flying with them to cover that distance althoug they are in transfer configuration... and it's almost the same to fly from Europe to Iraq.
And an Iraqi fighter couldn't fly-by such a lot countries without being intercepted and forced to land....he would have flew by countries like Israel, Turkey, Egipt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia...(and all of them are equipped with modern fighters like F-16 or F-15)

Does not sound real...I would doubt that a fighter jet would have the fuel range to fly from Iraq to US...

It didn't happen in NY, it happened in Kuwait IIRC. Not that unusual, North Korean crews defect to the South from time-to-time.

what happened? nothing. It doesn't have the range, unless it flew the Pacifc route, and stopped every few hundred miles for gas. I doubt he had the time, range, and $$$ for gas.
