My cat cries in pain when I pick her up. She doesn't sound upset, just in pain. She is 11 years old.

Maybe she doesn't like being picked up? We've adopted this cat from my in-laws and they never picked her up.

No, cats don't share genes or nervous system disorders with humans. There are many other things that could be wrong, though. Since you say that you've adopted her, have you had her thoroughly checked out by a vet?
11 isn't that old, if she's always been an indoor cat with proper medical attention and nutrition. She may well have arthritis, though I think you'd see it in how she carries herself.
Some cats really hate being picked up, but they usually express themselves more aggressively than vocally - at least, the ones I know have. Does she squirm to be let down?

That is a sign that something is not right inside her body and she needs to see a vet. My 22 and 1/2 year old cat had severe arthritis and she was bathed regularly and picked up and never cried out in pain.
I think 11 is way too young for it to be something as simple as arthritis pain. I have 15 yr old, 14 yr old and 13 yr old cats and they have no symptoms of arthritis.

Older cats can suffer from many ailments. It could be as serious as a tumor in her stomach. I think you'd better take her to a vet.

She's an elderly cat. She may have arthritis. I would get her checked out be a vet any way in case it's something more serious.
