Actually I would dare say that most kids today couldn't come anywhere near close to passing a test of the past.

In the previous 11 answers, there are many good explanations to your question.
But none mentioned the big fact: The population level. All around the world is suffering the same over population problem. Of course in Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, and India the more crowded countries, the problem is bigger.
100 years ago, the local resources were, probably less than now, but population was very much less than today. we have better heath care processes, so We are millions more, and living longer. Jobs are not as many as we need, pollution is a bad heritage today. We can say modernity brig to us comfortable way of living, but now the simple old way of living is not enough for none of us, today, so I can not say the nowadays life is better, and perhaps 100 years before, people were happy with less than the 10% of things/belongings We have today.
The publicity make us buy things and commodities We do not really need, is that happiness, modernity or an economic and collective suicide?
So, if We do not really improve our present, starting with ourselves, the 100 past years life, for sure, was better than ours.
To conclude, the bigger population figures are making the difference, not only in India, but all around the world: We are many times more, the word places are the same, more exhausted, more contaminated, more eroded, less human, more competitive, and so on.

Simply because the standards of measurement were not the same what they are today.
A person with lesser education and limited knowledge about the rest of the world or more newer achievements would definetly be more happy with whatever he has, even today. Go to a small vllage in India - you will still find lot of happy people with simple means of living. You cannot always buy happiness.
People's expectations change as time goes by - this is called evolution and progress.

And those without educations worked an average of 60-70 hours a week, and had an average lifespan of 47 years. Disease could strike you down at any time. You had no protection against abusive employers--and crime was much higher--and more violent. Etc, etc, etc.
The illusion that "life was better in the good old days" is just that--an illusion. Our world today has its faults--and could be a lot better than it is. Butthat's not the same as saying it was better in the past--or that people were happier. It wasn't and they weren't.

"Old is gold" Yes,this is a famous proverb of past days.Really people was very much happy and peaceful before 100 years even though there is no electricity and proper education. This is because they have no greediness to earn a lot of money and they enjoyed their wealth along with their neighbourhood. There was almost reduced quarrels.Truth and cooperation was given most priority in families. No industrialisation so there is no pollution problems. Work hard , Trust in God makes their life peaceful and sophisticated.

Don't think those were the good old days.
Women would sleep with their babies because they would freeze to death.
There was no modern meds and people die horrible deaths.
If you were to go back 100 years they would say or 100 years ago was the best of times.
My dad put it best. This is worst place in the world the best place is where I am going and the second best place is the one I just left.
Or Dickens too had his take "It was the best of times it was the worst of times"

Well, they had their share of hardships 100 years ago, but I think people were generally happier because families spent more time together without all of the distractions like we have today (tv, internet, video games, etc).

Earlier people were satisfied in what they had. They also reacted with others sentimentally. Today, greed and unhappiness has captured the mind of human being.
