I'd agree with Jackie. Most Thai in Bangkok can speak English, especially around sky train stations and underground stations. Some broken English speaker in touristic places, shopping mall and street shops.
It's not many people speak good English here but most of them can understand general conversation. You will not have any problem being here without Thai interpreter.

As above.
Tourists places are ok. Hotels staff will know english.
You will have no problem going there and NOT be able to speak Thai (but you will impress people more if you at least show that you took the effort knowing some basic Thai words). Many people do understand English and most will be able to speak some - but don't expect perfect, grammatically correct english.
Places in the big cities have signs in English anyway - so getting around and finding places is no problem.

Some people speak broken English. Many others, no English at all. You can negotiate better deals on merchandise if you speak Thai.

not much i can say thathavent already been said.
But, you could goto Thailand visit all the places you want to and do all the things you want to without speaking a word of thai. But i still would say learn the basic 20 words if you can do, you know the ones, hello, thankyou, goodbye, how much, etc
you will get alot better delas if you make the effort to learn alittle thai. Its only polite really isnt it
But like me if you find it hard to pick languages up, dont worry you will find it easy

Most Thai in Bangkok and around main tourist attraction areas can speak English (not grammartically correct but you would still understand). We have pretty fair listening skill, but not good conversation skill. So, please be patient.
