I have extensive experience with Pokerbots, as I am a professional gambler.
First, to clarify, there are poker calculators. these stsyems monitor the game, including the your position at the table, the cards shown, the number of people playing, etc and in a split second calculate your odds of winning. It then reccommends an action -- fold, raise, etc.
A pokerbot works with the calculator to execute the order...so if the calculator says raise, then the bot will raise.
I leave my pc playing poker for hours at a time and often make between $30 - $100 per 8 hours. tedious if you were playing, not tedious if you are taking a shower, at work, or watching a game on tv.
My calculator was about $50 USD, and the bot was $10 USD.
Make sure the calculator and bot work for the sites you usually play.
The other big thing I have like about the bots / calculators is I can watch it play, and it has made me a much better player.
Last, there are some new bots out there that help you play perfect blackjack, etc to take advanatage of bonuses. I have not tried them, but they look interesting.

I read an article in a Sunday Times supplement that they do indeed work. The problem is that you do not know if your poker bot is playing against several other poker bots as opposed to human beings. If it is you still wont have any advantage. Plus if the on line casino figures out (or even suspects) what you are up to (ie cheating) they can close your account and confiscate all the money in it. So yes they are too good to be true.

I think pokerbots can work because there are so many bad players out there who will continue to play poorly no matter what. However, I also believe that given enough time, I could destroy any pokerbot. The problem with bots is that poker is a very nuanced game (as is chess). The bots are just not as good at analytical reasoning as a competent poker player. Let me observe a bot in action for a couple hours, and I will destroy it.

I guess some of them must work quite well, or the online Poker rooms wouldn't spend so much time and money tracking and banning them
The bottom line is, if you buy one and use it, you risk being permanently banned from a poker site
It is interesting if Poker Bots do work, because that really commends a more clinical, mathematical approach to Poker
