My question is if this is true why do they not talk to their followers still. Now we have evolved more and have a better understanding of the world and universe.
Is it because they never really existed and where just the writings of past so called holy people?

And are people who hear voices in their heads not schizophrenic. Should huge swathes of the planet really listen to them and lead their lives by what they said a couple of thousand years ago

No, not all religions claim to be based on divine revelation. Take for example Taoism and Confucianism. Also, you have religions that have no gods in the first place.

But you do have a very good question about the religions that do claim to be based on what "God" tells them. Why would such a powerful god choose only to revel himself to humankind back when civilization was just starting out. Why not now when we have the capability of documenting and recording his existence. There would be less errors in "his word" because it could all be computerized.

There is a test, based on the ontological evidence against a god, that you can do to try the existence of a god. Pray, and ask the particular god in question to provide you with a clear proof for his existence within a week. After that week, if you have got a proof that it exists, send me the evidence. If not, there are only three reasons I can think of that are plausible: (1) The god does not exist, (2) The god does not want to response for some unknown reason or (3) The god can't give you this evidence. Because of the ontological evidence, alternative (2) and (3) are not worth your worship and thus they equal alternative (1). So if you get no response the god in question does not exist.

Buddhism has no concept of a God, but seeks to escape the circle of life, death and suffering by living according to the principles of harmlessness, self discipline and meditation.

That single sentence may well be the shortest desciption of Buddhism there's ever been. Which means that it misses out a good deal.

I guess the important thing is that Buddhists have lived by these principles for two and a half thousand years and found that they work. There is no divine revelation for Buddhists, just a man who proposed a way out of suffering. A way which still works.

Religion has nothing to do with business and control, except for scientology. The founders of most of the larger modern religions really had the greater good in mind when they came up with them.

Now part of the problem, I'm sure, is a lot of early writers were in fact crazy, dreaming, or hallucinating during these so-called revelations.

On the other hand, many think that believing is a matter of faith. We do not get miraculous signs to compel us to believe. We must find it within ourselves to find God.

People are less gullible now, so many of us know gods do not exist and thus do not talk to us. If someone says gods speak to him, he is sent to a psychiatrist. If such doctors had existed long ago, Moses would have been in a nuthouse for saying a god called "I am that I am" (what gibberish) spoke to him in a burning bush.

No, I think religions are based on what specific people have SAID God told them - we have no proof that God did actually tell them anything - for all we know it could all be a figment of their imaginations. It all comes down to faith and how much credibility a person, prophet etc. had at the time.

This is so true... and who is the correct god or gods? If there is a war between two religious parties and they both say, before going into to battle, God be with me...who's side does god take?

I think this was all made up to create a set of rules, an early goverment if you like!

Because religion is a business and means to control - pure and simple. The simple-minded need to feel someone tells them what to do and it's easier if it's a supernatural being no-one has ever talked with - talked to but not with.

What makes you think that God does not still talk to those who are willing to listen?

Listening is not difficult but it does take practice and focus.

Love and blessings Don
