It's a great way to start a cardio regime, and 3 miles is a pretty good distance.
You might want to gradually build up intensity... gradually increasing speed will burn more calories. I used the Couch to 5K program at coolrunning.com to build up to running 3 miles. Be careful not to overdo it - you are in a great routine so far!

Yes it is a good way to lose weight, but slowly. It has alot of health benefits as well, so dont stop if you arent loosing any weight, or not as much as youd like to. Try controling your diet and watch your calorie intake. As long as you have a good diet and keep walking you will lose weight, but try other exercises dont get stuck in just walking, it will get boring after a while.

Yes, any type of exercise is a good way to loose weight. Just remember to eat healthy (that means NO junk food) If you do not change your eating habits you will not loose any weight.
It is okay to treat yourself at the end of the week for doing a good job, like a candy bar. Remember to not over do it and erase everything you did.
Make sure you have friends and family to help you, support you, and to push you. Have fun and good luck!
