I have 2 Cocker Spaniels and they are always howling. It is not at any specific time. I have read that it could mean they are bored. I pet them, give them toys do everything I can to give them attention and they still do it. Once once starts the other one does it too!

It is in their makeup. All dogs howl. They are still partly wild.

well dogs howl because it's a form of communication to let other dogs know where they are. But I read that dogs that howl all the time because they are bored and lonely. Spoiled dogs also howl. I recommend reading this page :)

It really is just their nature. They are bringing out their old wolf like qualitys that they still have. As for preventing it, I would ask your vet, or go get them some obedience classes. Or even enroll them in a doggie day camp. Socializing might work for them. Hope it all turns out ok!

Dogs howl for a number of reasons: they're hurt, they're excited, they're frightened.

As soon as they start, scold them. That should shut them up.
