I catch children running with knives or scissors, or even sharp pencils sometimes, and I always wonder what I should tell them to do? What should I teach them as the correct and safe way to hold such objects while moving?

Duh! Of course you need to teach them the correct way to hold sharp objects while moving. You should tell them to not run, but kids will be kids. But even if a kid is taking a pair of scissors back across the room while walking, he/she still needs how to know how to hold them in case another kid, without a sharp object, is running.
Oh. Have them hold the sharp point downward and close to the body. So a pair of scissors should be held next to the upper thigh with the points downward towards the floor.

Well firstly, always buy child-friendly scissors etc. you know not the sharp pointy kinds.

Teach the kids to PUT THEM DOWN if they have to go get something else.

They should never be handling knives. If you give them knives make sure they are plastic or the butter knife type. I always tell my kids to put down their pencils when they talk as they have a tendancy of having hands flying everywhere. Just teach them the right way to pass scissors or knifes or pencils to people, which is to turn the sharp side towards themselves so that the person grabs the handle of the scissors or knife and not the sharp end of a pencil which can jab them.

This is how they should hold them in the palm of their hands too when moving about, but its better you teach them NOT to move about, to put them DOWN.

Keep the knives away from children full stop, if they need them for craft then they need to be supervised so they don't try to walk or run with them.

Scissors should always be held closed and by the point end, this makes them a lot safer as the blades are together and in the palm of the hand therefore out of harm's way. This is something I was always taught as good manners, but it is more to do with safety.

Sorry I don't know what the answer is with pencils.

I've always told my kids to hold sharp objects pointing down or ask an adult to help them get or use it, we bought safety scissors to allow them some independence.
