everyone agree that the purpose is to become "readable from rear view and side view mirror".
But why do mirrors switch left-right and not top-bottom? Why do ambulances write "Ambulance" backwards rather than upside-down?

So the driver in front can see in their rear-view mirror that it's an ambulance and get out of the way.

It is because the ambulence want the driver in front of them to see who it is and what it is correctly from the rear view mirror. If they didn't, then the driver wouldn't know what was happening.

So that if it is behind you and you look in your rear view mirror you will read it correctly and get out of the way.
