I don't it's so much the calories you take in. It's the type of calories you take in and the type of activity you do. You have to do cardio and weight-lifting in order to help your body increase it's metabolism (and given your age and how metabolism decreases as your age increases, this is very important). It can also be the amount of time you spend exercising. You need a solid hour of exercise every day (not too intense though). You also need a proper balance of carbs, fats, and protein. Too much of any of these leads to a weight gain.

UK Department of Health Estimated Average Requirements (EAR) are a daily calorie intake of 1940 calories per day for women and 2550 for men. Since most adults in the UK lead a sedentary lifestyle, these figures apply to adults with low activity levels.
It depends on a lot of things - Your body size and type, what you are doing in your job (it has been estimated that even an average office worker walks up to two miles a day in their job) and more importantly what type of food you are eating.
Are you trying to loose weight? If so you should look at a proper controlled diet to make sure you are eating a balanced diet that will help you loose weight and maybe an exercise program in a gym to get the right level of fat burning rather than cardio vascular exercise (Low weights - high rep count or low speed - long distance, that sort of thing.)

Id like to here what you are doing all together so that I can better understand your situation.
Dont drop your calories any more, doing so could put your body into starvation mode and then make the weight come back.

Instead do change your eating habits a little. And also you most likely will need to start doing a work out of some sort. You may have an active job but what are you doing? I had an active job filled with bending fast walking running and squating but I didnt loose any weight either.

It's most likely a case of not having enough of the right foods. Try increasing to 1400 calories a day, adding a serving of dairy (nonfat milk or yogurt) and a lean protein, egg or eggwhites, piece of lean meat, etc. I know on weeks when I drop to too few calories I havent had much luck w/weight loss (doing WW), but if I have the minimum every day then I have seen a 1/5-2lb loss.

I think you need to take note of what you are eating. Are you sure it is only 1200 calories. You know the ad on the TV where they say eat a kellogs Special K bar for breakfast and lunch and have a wholesome dinner. It is worth a try. They say you can lose an inch in 2 weeks

It depends on what type of foods you are consuming. If you are eating too many carbs or sugars you will not lose weight so fast because these make your body produce insulin to counteract the increase in your blood sugar level. If you eat nothing but sugar type foods ie biscuits your body will continue to produce insulin. Excess insulin is stored as fat. Protein based food or natural carbs ie fruit and veg do not require the production of insulin because they do not drastically affect your blood sugar level. So the answer to weight loss lies in the science. Eat the right food but still control your calorie intake and the weight will fall off. Remember that sugar is a hidden ingredient in a lot of foods ie bread. Read the labels or cook it yourself. The best foods are fish, chicken, veg, nuts and fruit (but in moderation as they contain a lot of natural sugars) Experiment with spices and herbs and check out some juicing recipes. But for a very fast start to your weightloss try the cambridge diet. It's online. I lost 2stones in 6 weeks. Good luck

Perhaps you are not eating enough. Sounds stupid but apparently if you don't eat enough you're body goes into shock and starts to reserve anything that you put into it, thus storing fat instead of burning it. Have small regular meals and things should start to change.
Otherwise go to your GP. Could be a condition such as under active thyroid.

If only consuming 1200 cals and exercising you should be losing weight. Try writing everything down that you eat and drink, weigh everything. Are you following a specific diet. Rosemary Conley's Gi diet is good and gives you recipe ideas etc.
