Out family thinks the 'Berg' means hill, except for my dad who thinks it means 'city', although I think that's 'Burg'. I don't speak German and my German-speaking friends haven't been able to help me.

"Berg" means mountain (or a big hill too), and a common ending for Germanic language surnames (see Spielberg, Goldberg, etc.).
"Burg" would be a castle btw.
The "Arken" bit is more difficult, it could perhaps be derived from Arche (as in "die Arche Noah" = "Noah´s Ark", which after all ended up on a mountain so there´s a kind of logic there), but that´s just a guess.
