Depends on past experiences with commitments. In certain cases, it's hard for a man to commit because of how a woman has scarred him and vice versa. The "cold feet" effect happens to alot of men and women as well. That is simply explained by fear. Even though you may be in love with your significant other and everything works, just the fear of thinking, "ok, I'm going to be with this one person for the remainder of my life" is absolutely horrifying to certain people. To me, that's just silly. That should be the goal of every relationship, to one day become as one.
I, am a man who is afraid of uncommitted people. That's where the true fear lies with commitment oriented people. As dangerous as it is nowadays, it would be damn near psychotic not to be! With all of the diseases and unstable people in the world now, it would almost be like suicide. I am still seeking my queen, and I am confident that one day I will arrive in her life. I await that day because she will be grateful to GOD for sending me her way, I will be as well, for she will not have any problem with me being committed to her, or anything else for that matter. That is real love. She will know this.
Not all of us are afraid of commitment, only boys and girls.
Real men and women embrace the thought of it.

Thats not true some guys commit easy some girls commit easy. Some dont at all. Again you are meeting the wrong guys, girls dont seem to understand that there are quite a few guys that want and will commit. The whole not commit thing comes from tv and movies, in real life it's way diffrent. If you are having a hard time with guys commiting maybe it is because of you, ever think of that. Becasue most guys will commit if the right girl comes along.

I am a woman, and am very afraid of commitment! It scares me b/c the closer and more commited to someone you are, the more it would hurt if something happened to break you guys up! That is why it is hard for me to get close to someone!

It is a falsehood that guys don't want to commit, it is simply they don't want to commit to that particular person.
I will give you a personal story I once dated a girl for 3 years had good times together sex was great, but she had too many negatives to see it not being a disaster getting married to her, so when she put pressure on me for a commitment I had to move on.

Men need to hunt and women need to gather. We are not comfortable with the idea of the hunt being called off officially (it's okay in reality though).

I have no fear, but I would want it on my terms meaning that I don't want her to play a role. I want her to be a woman; comfortable in her body, mature, independent, intelligent, sensual, and erotic.

I think men are just confused about whats going on inside them and it makes them scared. Instead of talkingabout it they bottle it up inside and it makes us women look like the odd ones to them. Maybe we are all just programmed differently I dunno but I do know exactly what you mean! lol
