What percentage of their college should be paid for by Mom and Dad. Too much and they will certainly not appreciate it and possibly abuse the situation, not enough and they will struggle and may not perform to their fullest.
Any thoughts?

I do not think that your presumption is true. I think that parents should pay as much as they can afford to. The cost of a college education is high and any costs that can be carried by parents comfortably should be done. If children do take advantage, then perhaps there should be consequences, but I do not think that parents should start off with the presumption that their kids will not appreciate their contributions.

What you can afford, and do not take out a Parent loan. I had grants, scholarships, some loans, and workstudy. My parents mainly helped me with a little spending money, or if my car needed fixing, Nothing major. Encourage them and help them fill out scholarship applications. And talk with your children about how much you can afford so that when they make their decisions on what school they want to go they make an informed decision.

well, I've already told my dad that I wanted to go to grad school, so he has agreed to pay my under-grad for me, and I'll take care of the rest.

But in your situation, I think the parents should pay the tuition and maybe room-and-board. Allow your student to pay for his or her own books that way, they have also invested money into their education but its not as big of a burden as having to pay the tution .. hope this helps =]
