People say islam was spread by the sword.
yet they can't provide proof of it, It is true that muslims fought for islam during the prophet's time but it was always self defense. NO one forced people to convert.
But why doesn't anyone say that democracy is being spread by the sword today.
Well because we don't use swords anymore.
democracy is being spread by the gun now a days.
If you believe that islam was spread by the sword, pease show me proof.
If you can prove it than isn't it the same thing today where democracy is being spread by the SWORD (GUN)..

What empire do you think Genghis Kahn was expanding? it certainly wasnt Mongolia, there is no proof except for many figures throughout history that have spread the word of islam through the sword, just like Christians did it during the crusades. im not defending them either. it also states in the quran somewhere to spread the word of islam to all four corners of the world. What is Jihad about? holy war?? why is jihad being taught to muslims worldwide? Religions have to spread somehow and how is Islam the most prominent religion in countries like Indonesia when the predominantly traditional religions like Buddhism have always been around? Islam WAS spread by the sword in historic times.

Most of the big religions on this planet were also spread by the sword (thus in a violent way). Islam is no exception to this.
If I take Spain for example, someone on this page states that "Muslims ruled Spain for 800 years". Before you rule over some place (which by the way is not yours), you invade it. Simple as that. Nowhere it has been recorded that the Muslims ("Berbers") were invited by the Visigoths. And it was not a single invasion, in the 800 years occupation several ones took place, replacing the existing rulers by other Muslim rulers.
Note: No crusaders came to Spain. The Spaniards (and the Portuguese) themselves, in a 800 years struggle, drove the Muslims out of the Iberian Peninsula in 1492.
Non-Muslims ("infidels"), like the Jews and Christians living in the Muslim Arabic world and who didn't convert to Islam, were left unharmed as long as they paid special taxes to the Muslim rulers. It was a way of paying for their surviving, there was no other way. Hence the survival of for instance the Coptic Christians.

Who are you kidding us or yourself. how much more proof do you want that it was spread by the sword.
No amount of proof will suffice you or anyone who refuse to put down your prophet of the pedestal you all put him above, and even some of you put him above Allah himself! I will never understand why would someone do that!
Have you memorize the Quran and the Hadith. then you know that saying by Muhammad. " I was victorious by terror". That is what your own prophet said. Himself. He admitted that his victory was accomplished by Terror.
Keep saying that to yourself, Islam was not spread by the sword, and no one was forced to convert. if that makes you feel better, but I prefer to look at how much and how many have been killed and their properties taken away by Muhammad. May he rest in peace. He was a human being and made his mistake in his life, just as we all do, with different degrees. May God have mercy on his soul.

I'm not picking on Islam but yes Islam was spread by the sword. My country killed Indians, a national shame indeed.
Since you have a problem with my country, look to historians outside of this country.

One instance is the Ottomon Turks they would conquer uder islam and after anea would be taken over the peole of such teritory would have to give up a quota of children to be trainede islam, The Mamluks did the same thing

islam doesn't spread using the swords....
we had learned history that the empires of islamic countries, when the thousands year of caliph rules and prophet Muhammad... all the people who embrace islam sincerely..but there still peoples who being muslim to take the benefits from it...and one more thing..eventhough muslim conquered the world at that time..there's still non-muslim and the islamic ruler never forced them to embrace....if islam spread using the sword..don't you think that everyone compulsory to embrace islam...if not they might be killed using the sword...isn't it?
but then, such things not happened, prophet muhammad and the caliphs..treated non-muslim without ignoring their rights...
that the brief history....islam spread because it's the truth religion....a divine and can be accepted globally... everyone can practised what in islam...without...considering they are white,brown or black people....or maybe you arabians or not...
don't you that the truth will always be the winner.... ALLAH will always ensure HIS religion will always be on the top...

from what I have learned and read, Muslims in Mohammed's time and after did go through a lot of wars, but those were either for political reasons or because the other party broke the treaty between then, and Muslims did warn them before they went through the battle and all.
And when Muslims won, non Muslims and Muslims lived in harmony, they were not forced. and those who were captured in the reign of Mohammed were allowed to let go if they each taught 10 Muslims to read and write.. I am not sure whether it happened all the time.
Islamic laws were implemented after they won, and each non Muslim had to pay a tax and it was prohibited to fight a non Muslim.
