Actually, it frequently does. The best way to combat it, is through education.
Religion has thrived all over the world by making people think they are worthless scum that are only redeemed by bowing to their god. That's probably the best example of the effectiveness of this tactic.

Just look back to the playground of schools. The bullies on playgrounds are the ones who put others down to make themselves feel better. In middle school when kids are just trying to find themselves it is wide spread because many (if not most) of the kids at that age are questioning what they believe and who they are and by putting others down or picking on things that they feel will put another down makes them feel bigger and more powerful. When you look at this it is in most cases the one doing the put downs as big questions about themselves and really are trying to convince themselves that they are the right or best one. Some people get stuck at this level and spend the rest of their lives living like this which is sad. It takes a lot of energy to always be trying to prove yourself....

I think the majority of these people are either oblivious of the fact that they are that way and just live in denial every day or they are just plainly evil. This is a behavior that is a defense mechanism used but people who have low self esteems and carry envy and hatred in their hearts. Of course... we can't seem tooooo self righteous b/c it's the human nature to be foolish and to falter at any time.

I just give them this scripture.
"27But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak(small) things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29That no flesh should glory in his presence." 1 Corinthians 1:27-29

It actually does work. Some poeple who aren't weakminded haven't built a think skin yet, and so they are easy prey for the weakminded.

Apparently they do. Liberals have been practicing this technique for decades. We can combat their foolishness, however, with education!
