I hold my breath until it stops.........works every time.
My husand got them and I told him to hold his breath, he didn't believe me but did it and it worked for him too

Hiccups are caused by a piece of foreign matter resting on your diaphram (the muscle just below your lungs) causing it to spasm.
There are two ways to relieve the hiccups.
The first one only works on mild to moderate cases, where, once the foreign matter is moved, the diaphram relaxes immediately. Take a deep breath in, the breathe out very hard and breathe out all the air, until you hear a wheeze. Then cough a couple of times. Repeat process a few times. This gets the diaphram to bounce the foreign matter off and away from itself, and the end result is no more hiccups.
For severe hiccups, where you tried the first method, but the diaphram is still spazzing once the foreign matter is gone, Dill Tea is the perfect cure and is specifically known to be the only thing out there to actually cure hiccups. Dill weed has anti-spasmoitic properties and makes the diaphram relax. Take a tea spoon of dill weed and add it to 8 oz of boiling water. Let steep for 10 minutes. (Don't add sugar or honey or anything.) The dill tea doesn't taste all that great, (but it isn't horrible) but fortunately, you don't need to drink much of it, before it starts working.

Hiccups is caused by pressure on the diaphragm (the muscle which you use to breathe- it lies between the lungs and the abdominal cavity.
The usual cause of the pressure is an overfilled stomach- usually over-filled with swallowed air (or gases made by digesting food)
Solution?
a good burp. If necessary drink some mineral water with gas, then belch. may not sound "nice" but it sure works.
(if did not work at first go, try again)
If you get them real often, see a doctor. It _might_ mean you have gastric ulcers

If you eat too fast, you can swallow air along with your food and end up with a case of the hiccups.
Any other practices that might irritate the diaphragm such as eating too much (especially fatty foods) or drinking too much (drunk people hiccup) can make you prone to having hiccups.
In these instances, your stomach, which sits underneath and adjacent to the diaphragm, is distended or stretched. Because they occur in relation to eating and drinking, hiccups are sometimes thought to be a reflex to protect you from choking.
Try these methods at home:
Hold your breath.
Drink a glass of water quickly.
Become frightened.
Use smelling salts.
Pull hard on your tongue.
Place one-half teaspoon of dry sugar on the back of your tongue. (You can repeat this process 3 times at 2-minute intervals. Use corn syrup, not sugar, in young children.)

All these people dont know their feet from their *** so dont listen to them. Hiccups is a spasm of the diaphragm or however you spell it. Its the muscle which allows you to breath in heavily. If the hiccups wont go away it might be because you have so gastrointestinal problem and the only way to cure it is with death.

Tried everything. The only thing that worked for me was a teaspoon of sugar. Works every time now.

not sure the cause, I think it happens when you swallow to much air. anyhow try swallowing a large spoonful of sugar. It really works my mom made me do it when I was little and mama knows best!
