The biggest study ever of alcohol's effects on health found that a drink a day in middle age reduces the risk of death by 20 percent.

Although alcohol is not needed to have fun necessarily, with the right group of friends or strangers, alcohol can enhance the fun. Especially with a group of strangers as inhibition and timidness seem to be thrown out the window with each glass of beer or shot of liquor. It can help break the ice. Also, as it says on the shirts and posters, helps ugly girls get laid and helps white people dance. It is a useful substance when used correctly and in moderation, however, many people take it to extremes. Don't blame the beer. Don't ever blame the beer. Its people's own fault they get into trouble with alcohol: pregnancies, D.U.I's and the like.

The only positive influence I know is the health benefit of drinking red wine. The tannins in the wine help contribute to a healthy heart. But this benefit is limited to ONE glass per day.

Other than that, alcohol tends to destroy the body at the cellular level, with accumalitive effects over time.

Any other effect of its consumption--increased libido, lowering inhibitions, relaxation, etc.--can be had by other, less destructive habits: tantric practices, yoga, moderate exercise.

Hope this helps.

Temporary confidence increases, and also a lot of people find it a good way to unwind.

The negatives from drinking alcohol still in my opinion outweigh the positives overall though.

There are various studies showing that alcohol (especially red wine) does have health benefits. Of course, this means alcohol in moderation.

It is relaxing. I recall crying my eyes out when I was about 22 and a virgin to alcohol. My boyfriend (at the time) lied and was with another woman. I was very upset and my Dad gave me orange juice with vodka. It really calmed me down and I was able to get a grip.

Being social. You have a better shot at getting a promotion if you have a drink with your co-workers, and you may meet someone at a happy hour who knows of a great job opportunity for you
