Given the following quote:
> "One poll, commissioned by CBS News, revealed that more than half of the US population believes that God created human beings in their present form.
The same poll indicates that some 48% of respondents think that this divine creation event occurred 'within the last 10,000 years."
the article makes me embarrassed to be American.

I do not care to read the whole article - I did scan it and they seem to be 'catching up' and quite behind on the 'state of the nation.' regarding the debate.
Evolution is in deep trouble. I know many find that comical, but they just are not keeping up.
The debate really is over "old" earth or "young" earth.
I am in the old earth 'camp' and I dig these guys:
www.reasons.org
I did like how the article quite quickly admitted that evolution has no proof! Only a claim.

my opinion on the whole "Darwin Theory of Evalution " is this:
I am 42 years old ,was raised in the bible belt of the USA, while in high school we were taught about Darwins theory so I've heard it for 25-30 years now, and it has not changed my thinking at all I think that I will stick with Creation.
But if others want to believe that they evolved from the ape spiecies, that is there right. Just as I have the right to my beliefs, I won't push my beliefs off on you if you don't push yours on me.
but there is also the theory of L. Ron Hubbard, that if I'm not mistaken believes that " mankind evolved from rodent droppings that a volcano blew all over the earth and that it evolved into man" I think that is the basis of Sciontology, if you are for that OK.
I personally feel that people choose to believe, what ever is the closest belief system to the way they choose there life, therefor they feel they are living a moral life in accordance to there life style. It's really hard to look at yourself and say " man i really am a messed up person and have nothing to believe in, I have wasted my life foolishly and have no hope" but it is real easy to justify everything you do so that you are not a bad person

First of all, many of Darwins theory's have already been proven wrong. We did not evolve from apes, being the main one. A type of Homo species but not apes.
When Darwin wrote On the Origin of Species in 1859 so many discoveries have not yet been made and this book took the world by storm. We now know we had evolved from a Homo Species. Everything evolves. We are still evolving as humans. At that time, Darwin didn't know we would later find human remains dating more than 3.5 million years old.

I ma surprised an article on Darwin had so little to say about the man. With that said, I think it is a fairly accurate summary of the debate.

It really makes us look so horribly ignorant on the world stage. As well it should. I wish the BBC had said something to the effect of "57% of Americans believe that God created man - meaning a healthy 43% were awake during biology class".
And they're completely right in their assessment of the situation. Evangelicals ARE attempting to re-educate the nation based on mythology and not fact.

Before I visited this forum, I would never have guessed that the debate was so heated. I'd say the article has it just about right.

It's sad that people are still so ignorant about science. It's very sad that such a large portion of the population still follows superstitious nonsense rather than evidence. It's really sad how effective the emotional manipulation and childhood indoctrination of religious beliefs is.

It is a good article, lots of facts (which a lot of people are not going to be confused by). The poor British are never going to figure us out, are they? By the way, they are not alone!

I think there needs to be a fusion of science and religion, both sides have something to learn from each other
