Nukes are a deterrent against other countries using their nukes. Like it was said before, nuclear war is a no-win situation. Sure the US has enough to take on the entire world but the aftermath and fallout will wipe them from the planet as well even if no one else retaliated. No one wants self-annihilation. Terrorists regimes are a wild-card, though, and I'm sure you know why.

it's what's called a slippery slope argument. the idea is that one bomb jdetonation just won't be enough. one side will detonate a bomb. then the other side will detonate a bomb. then another, and another. and then it will be ok and in the next conflict everybody will be using nuclear bombs, and within a very short time period the Earth will become an extremely hostile environment for humans and other mammals. ordinarily I am not a big fan of the slippery slope argument, but I have to admit it seems pretty strong to me in this case. the temptation to viciously annihilate the enemy is very strong for our many hate-filled leaders. Iran started making threats and puts a program into development, then Isreal used degraded uranium tips on their missiles against hezbollah and lebanese citizens in the conflict this past summer. there will be more dirty bombs and eventually somebody who gets his hands on a full on nuclear bomb is going to use it. I think we are travelling down this slippery slope whether we want to or not, and soon enough the use of nukes in petty thrid world conflicts is going to be old hat. and shortly after that we will have no drinkable water or breathable air, and not too much later our hair will fall out and we'll all die.
but a nuke is a strong statement. even dropping just one will have a global effect not just on our attitudes, but on the world we live in. I lived in Vancouver when the Chernobyll meltdown happened. the west coast of north america and central russia are pretty far away from each other, but the city of vancouver still had to close 2 of the 3 city water sources for several days because of nuclear fallout in the water. that stuff gets into the upper atmosphere and it really travels. if anybody says that a few bombs going off on the other side of the world won't really affect america has no idae what he or she is talking about.
hope you've found one or two useful ideas for your essay here. good luck!

Your teacher asked you to write an essay on why it's important to avoid nuclear war?
Just write "uhh .... because a nuclear war would kill lots and lots of people, if not destroy the world" and then hand in the paper.
The school systems today. Jeez.
This reminds me of that government study that cost millions of dollars to determine why people don't like beets.
I could have given them the answer for nothing -- "because beets don't taste good."

It's not really that important for the USA except to save lives. We could win a nuclear war with any other country(ies) on the planet.

The Cuban Missile disaster of October 1962 became the nearest concern that would have all started a nuclear conflict. The Soviet Union had put in nuclear missiles in Cuba for which the country placed a naval blockade round Cuba to circumvent any more desirable missiles from coming in. The Soviet & American navies got here nostril to nostril & it truly is at the same time as it got here close to to all out conflict. The Soviets ultimately relented & after negotiations with the country, agreed to dismantle the missile bases in Cuba.

Umm...I have no interest in life as I know it to end or change drastically at this time. The initial strike, the fallout afterwards. Nah. I've seen movies like 'The Day After' and that sort of thing. Yeah, fictional, but really not too far from the truth. Overall, just not good. For people, for the environment, for the planet in general.

A nuclear confrontation is a kind of no-win situation. Someone drops a bomb on us, kills thousands, maybe millions. We drop a bomb on them, kill millions more. Both sides lose. Even if we kill more people and the other side surrenders, there are still going to be aftereffects of a nuclear war.

Its not nuclear confrontation you need to worry about, thats been going on for more than fifty years!..Its the lunatic religious maniac with his finger on the tit, and in his madness, and for his God, presses it!..It will be done without thought, without conscience, and not caring how many innocents they kill, on fact the more that are slaughtered for their God..The better they will like it!..They are the real dangers in the world today because they will confront nobody...They will just do it!..

Yes, I agree countries like Russia and China having nukes isn't much a problem because they know we will launch them right back at them. But Islamic Extremist are the ones that would actually try to do it.....
Lets not forget to mention that they say there is over 10 billion(or million, I can't remember) of them....

Nukes aren't toys.
a one Kiloton bomb has the equivalent power of 1000 tons of TNT exploding at once. Our current largest conventional weapon is a Daisy cutter. which is approximately 20,000 lb. or 1/200 of the smallest nuke.
Even the smallest nuke would devastate a good size area of a city.
The B83 (the largest bomb in the US inventory) has a 1.2 Megaton Yield. is 1000 times more yield then bomb than the bomb that dropped on Hiroshima. It is capable of creating a fireball about 1/2 mile in diameter at ground zero. Everything within that radius would be incinerated. The radiated heated shock wave would move out from there.
Below are a couple of good resources on Nuclear blasts in particular the last reference shows blast radius and goes into great detail about the "effects"..
It is important to avoid the confrontations because of the devastation these devices cause.
I do think a nuke will be set off by some of the Radical Islamists in the US eventually.. I fear the day that happens.. And as I see it as inevitable not "if" but "when".
Waiting for the Big One"

For two years the terrorists have spoken openly and privately about a final, devastating attack that would “paralyze” the United States. In November 2001, the Taliban’s Mullah Omar spoke to a journalist about the final destruction of America. A man of simple words, Omar did not say how America would be destroyed.
Last week Osama bin Laden re-issued his famous religious ruling (fatwa) on the mass killing of Americans: “The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies -- civilian and military -- is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it…. This is in accordance with the words of Almighty God [who said], ‘fight the pagans all together as they fight you all together,’ and ‘fight them until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God.’"
While America relies on economic optimism to keep going, bin Laden relies on terrorist optimism. Exactly what is he planning? In 1999 terrorism expert Yossef Bodanksy quoted a senior Arab intelligence official as saying, “Osama bin Laden has acquired tactical nuclear weapons from the Islamic republics of Central Asia established after the collapse of the Soviet Union.” Recent postings on Islamist Internet sites, intercepted by intelligence experts, suggest that Islamic nuclear weapons may have been smuggled into the United States. A journalist who watches America’s borders recently dropped me a note: ”The fact something is about to go down is palpable. Many of my sources have gone into hibernation. It's been consistent that when that happens, something is going on.”
According to Bodansky, “Bin Laden’s emissaries paid the Chechins $30 million in cash and gave them two tons of Afghan heroin [approximately $600 million street value]” in exchange for nuclear weapons back in the 1990s. In his 1999 book, Bin Laden, the Man Who Declared War on America, Bodanksy wrote: “Evidence of the number of nuclear weapons purchased by the Chechens for bin Laden varies between ‘a few’ (Russian intelligence) to ‘more than twenty’ (conservative Arab intelligence services).”
Regardless of the weapons used, Osama’s re-issued fatwa tells us what to expect: “We -- with God's help -- call on every Muslim who believes in God and wishes to be rewarded to comply with God's order to kill the Americans and plunder their money wherever and whenever they find it. We also call on Muslim ulema, leaders, youth, and soldiers to launch raids on Satan's U.S. troops and the devil's supporters allying with them, and to displace those who are behind them so that they may learn a lesson.”
On 5 June 2003 Attorney General John Ashcroft told the House Judiciary Committee: “We must be vigilant. We must be unrelenting. We must not forget that al Qaeda’s primary terrorist target is the United States of America. Even though recent attacks were overseas, the terrorist network is committed to killing innocent Americans, including women and children, by the thousands or even the millions if they can.”
