I paid off this account in 2002 and I am just now getting a collection's notice. The first communication I recieved said "Final Notice"! I know I paid this off but being that it was so long ago I no longer have proof. This account has never showed up on my credit report. Is there anything that I can do to not have to pay it again?

First things first, paying an old bill from 2002 won't help you at all. Chances are you did pay it and a junk debt buyer (JDB) bought the debt and are now trying to get you to pay twice. Exercise your rights here and write a debt validation letter...this will make them prove you owe the debt by getting original copies.

"According to my rights under the FCRA, I dispute your claim and request validation. Please provide proof I owe you this debt by obtaining original copies of the debt, and the balance owed. Also, consider this a cease and desist letter, as I do not wish to be contacted about this debt again."

Chances are they will leave you alone.
