For whatever reason this year seems to be bad for coughs that hang on for a long time.
Take your temp and see if you have a fever..if not then it is just hanging on like some many people's seem to do this year.
It can easily take up to 3 weeks to kick the cough and if you are a smoker even longer.
If you are still concerned then go back to the Dr and insist on a chest x-ray to rule our bronchitis or pneumonia.
Good Luck...

Go back to the doctor. Even though he prescribed meds, if they don't work, that means another course of action needs to be taken.
A persistant cough could be something minor (my kids and I get what starts out as allergies, turns into a sinus infection, then a cold that settles in our chests, leading to a cough that can last a long time), but a persistant cough could also be a sign of a serious health problem such as lung cancer, TB, pneumonia, etc.
If you don't feel like your doctor is competant, find someone else, but don't assume that since you went to the doctor one time and tried one course of treatment that a visit to the doctor would just be a waste.

Go to the doctor again and get a new medication and ask what kind of cough syrup you should use. If you have a temperature it might be the beginning of phenomena.
If you want to make your own cough syrup mix some honey with a little lemon juice and a little brandy.

Try a natural cough syrup with honey. I had a really deep, hacking cough that I could not get rid of last winter, and the honey syrup, though it tastes AWFUL, really did the trick. It's called "Broncolin" and you can find it at Walmart and CVS stores. It knocked my cough out in 3 days, and I could finally breathe normally again!

Go back to the doctor--let him try again.
I had a friend (had is the operative word) who had a constant cough---the doctor kept trying to get rid of it--never took an Xray. About 4 months later, she was so tired, she went to the doctor again. He took Xrays. 4 months later, she was dead of a fast growing lung cancer. What if the doctor had been more vigilant at the first-----------?

Go back to the doctor. I had a bad cough and ended up with pneumonia. There is enough medication around that you shouldn't have to suffer.

Go back to the doc and tell him/her you are still coughing. Maybe you need antibiotics or a cough syrup with codeine. Perhaps a chest x ray if you haven't had one already----

if it gets worse when you lie down then it is probably Post Nasal Drip. It can last for months before it subsides - and usually returns in Spring, with the pollen and all. You can have an op, but it usually always comes back.

Go back to your doctor and if they don't do further tests, go to a different doctor until someone does. It could be a serious problem. You have the right to request they do thorough tests if you have insurance.
