The North American term "bang" or "bangs" is thought to come from the use of the word "bang" to connote something sudden or abrupt, and the idea that the hair over the forehead comes to an abrupt end after just a few inches. The British term "fringe" simply refers to the resemblence of the short row of hair to ornamental fringe trim.

Why is it called "fringe" where you are at? ;-)
In any case, Wikipedia says that the North American term "bang" or "bangs" is thought to come from the use of the word "bang" to connote something sudden or abrupt, and the idea that the hair over the forehead comes to an abrupt end after just a few inches.

Don't everyone assume this question is derogatory towards Americans. It just seems to be an interesting question of etymology. It can be traced possibly like the word dumb which really means unable to speak but has been confused with the German word dumm which means stupid. Now if the Americans couldn't distinguish between the two words then, yes, it does call into question their linguisitic ability but let's not condemn them for that. There are many greater things to condemn them fior.

I've never heard it called your "fringe" before. Maybe you could tell me why it's called that instead of bangs.
