Yet is it all pointless when my neighbours don't recycle, have their heating on full with the windows open and leave every light in the house on?

It is not pointless! If your neighbors are going to be ignorant and gluttonous then you have no control over that. You control how you affect your environment and a positive effect is better then a negative one. Soon enough your neighbors will see what you are doing and maybe, just maybe they will stop being so lazy and waste-full and follow your lead. One day we will all be forced to take such initiative.

These are all great tips. One of the first things I did when I made the commitment to green living is switch all my lighting to energy efficient bulbs. It's an inexpensive solution and can definitely make a difference. I just read an article too about the lighting legislation act. Between 2012 and 2014, standard A-line 40- and 100-watt incandescent light bulbs must use 30% less energy, but produce the same light output as the incandescent bulbs most of us use today.

No it's not pointless even if your neighbours don't do the same. I recycle, and this Saturday I'm getting my cavity wall insulation done to save on the heating.

If we all said it was pointless then that wouldn't be a good thing.

No, it's not pointless. It is personal choice and you choose to be responsible, they don't. After all, anything we can do is rendered ineffective by the ignorant, wishful and wasteful approach of the Americans but we can still take responsibilty for ourselves.

No its not useless. Sometimes if feels like it when you see people not caring like that. But like you I also do everything I can.

You can only do what you can and what's in your control. If others join you on the journey then its a bonus.
