How long have you been dating him, how old is he and what are his interests? You best bet is to find something he likes to do or a hobby and then buy something specific to that. If he plays golf, get him some golf equipment, clothing, dvds, whatever. If he smokes cigars, get him cigar of the month club or something similar. It'll show that you were thinking about a gift for HIM and not a generic boyfriend gift.
