The table has a wood top with green legs/base and green chairs with a cream colored seat cushion. I want to paint it black to go with the new mirror I just bought for the wall. What type of paint do I use on wood furniture?

I would definitely recommend priming it. you should use a latex primer sealer designed to stick to glossy surfaces. then paint with a latex interior paint in the finish of your choice. i would suggest a semi-gloss to give you a better/more durable finish. i would not suggest using an oil, as they are getting to be very expensive, and a lot a regions will be forced by the EPA to stop selling in the next couple years. also, try to get a premixed black. don't let the paint store tint it black. if the store you go to doesn't have black already on the shelf, go to another store. if they mix it, the paint wont do as well. i would apply a couple coats of paint and not coat with a lacquer/varnish. these types of product WILL YELLOW over time. they get more yellow, and cloudy as time goes by. if you MUST clear coat, use a latex polyurethane. it will stay completely clear.

Primer:Benjamin Moore Fresh start All purpose primer 023-00
finish: Benjamin Moore Ironclad Latex Metal & Wood Enamel 363-80
Clear(if you must):Benjamin Moore Stays Clear LAtex Polyurethane

Forjj and Lenroc Designs have given u great advice. I would add one thing using a really good quality Paint Brush. Don't mess with cheap, throw away. It will leave streaks, pieces of bristles etc... use a really GOOD QUALITY BRUSH, with Good Quality paint.
Don't be afraid to take a chair or leg with u to the paint store, home depot or lowe's store and talk with manager or staff who knows their product in the paint department. Home Depot is great about actually showing u the steps involved in painting semi professional. If u ever see ads or on net for self improvement free classes.! Take them, u learn a ton, get discount coupons, free goodies and many times refreshments and actual hands on training.

I don't believe you need a specific type of paint, but it would be a good idea to use a wood primer before you paint it black. Also, since it's a piece of furniture that Will be used a great deal and you'll probably be wiping it down with a wet cloth, use a couple coats of varnish or clear lacquer to seal it.

Behr Premium Paint has a primer/paint combo which takes a two step process into one. I would also suggest a clear varnish after painting to protect from knicks and scratches!
