If we were all obedient, our lives today would be much different than they are now. For example;
Galileo was sanctioned by the Roman Catholic church because he discovered that the planets rotate around the sun, not the earth.
The U.S.A. would not exist if we were obedient to Great Britain.
(as well as democracy itself, to mention it)
Breaking free from established governments, ideas, religion, and science are what leads to innovation. Without challenge and change we would stagnate. Life would be very boring as well!

Your question is stated in such a way to make it sound like being obedient to God is restrictive in not allowing you to explore other possibilities. I can't think of one thing that God tells me not to do that I think I should be able to do. God says that homosexuality is a sin, don't submit. No problem, no interest!
Also the phrase "play safe" implies something like, just in case there is a God. Well I firmly believe that there is a God. And if I believe that there is a God, then His ways are far wiser than mine and I should follow what He says. God doesn't want us to randomly "explore other possibilities". Just like the saying goes, if you play with fire, your going to end up getting burnt. God wants the best for us and wants to guide us from behavior or things that will end up harming us.

I would rather be obedient to be saved
and I know for sure that to "explore other possibilities" or to sin can only lead to unhappiness and failure.
The road to success is to obey the commands of God.

It is hard to answer but I can tell you that I have explored many other possibilities in my long life and after that I came to realize that for me personally a relationship with my maker was the only way for me to feel happy and content. So I guess my answer would be explore if you want to but remember what an old person once told you.

Being obedient to a set of moral values is a choice. It is not a lack of freedom in any way.

Yes, I would rather be obedient to God, and with so many God haters around to day, I don't consider being a Christian all that safe.
