First off, its What, not wat. Use the spell check, its there for a reason.
On the weekend I usually cook at home, but during the week it's generally a sandwich or something after work. As mentioned, but of "American" food is a variation of food brought over by other cultures. Burgers are somewhat American, but for the most part, its a variation of foods.

People in America eat fast food yes, but not all the time. Since the United States is a cultural melting pot we eat foods that come from all over the world. Where I live (in middle America) Mexican food is very popular. Tacos, burritos, that sort of thing. Out west, Asian food is popular (many Chinese and Japanese people settled in California). For true, authentic "American" cooking, you have to go back to the natives...the people Columbus called "Indians." They ate deer, bison, fruits and vegetables. That's the closest thing to "American" food. As for state dishes, we don't really have those (as far as I know). Philadelphia is famous for bagels, New Orleans for gumbo, Kansas City has it's Strip Steak, I'm sure there are others...

The problem with american food is that it is so diverse. Where I live at, with it's many rivers and the ocean, we are big on seafood both fresh and saltwater. Crabs and clams are a huge industry, so you can find it anywhere.
Further south, it changes depending on where you go. They use a lighter fare. Up north, it is heavier fare. When I lived in Michigan, there was a lot of meat on the table, mostly because we lived in the country and did a lot of hunting.
Now, me, personally, I used to be a chef, so I cook a lot at home. Chicken dishes mainly, soups, stews, and of course potatoe and pasta dishes. Everything gets gravy of course, which my friends think is crazy. However, they put ketchup on everything, so it balances out.

Nothing in America is really american, most of it was brought over with each new immigrant came. No most people don't eat out all the time. I cook 7 days a week and can't remember the last time we at out.

Aside from regional food like Philly's, Cincinatti chili, gumbo, etouffe, crab boils, things like that, state fair food is awesome.
It's about any food item you can think of, deep fried and on a stick. Seriously. You can get about anything on a stick even gyros. I've even seen a deep fried pork chop on a stick.
