You can only have 256 colors with gif but http://www.irfanview.com/
is the best to convert that I can find.

This is not possible in general unless your BMP has less than 256 colors.

An image processing program can make an image that is nearly the same by creating a palette to match the input image. I used to use the median split method to get a convincing portrait in 32 colours or less.

The only way you can do this is if your .bmp file has fewer than 256 colours.

.bmp files can contain a maximum of 16 million colours, whereas .gif files can contain a maximum of 256 colours.

Use "GIF Animator" software. It is the best software for making gif format pictures.

However, you can use almost any free converter from ZD Net or C Net to do the job.
