The simple answer is, it isn't. The sky, technically, has no color to it. The blue you see is because the darkness of space, which is then lightened by the defraction of sunlight. The more sunlight, the more the defraction of light, the lighter the sky appears. It happens best in the shorter (bluer) wavelengths and is called Rayliegh Scatter.
The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air.
However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.
There is another scatter that I can't remember the name of right now. It is responsible for the beautiful red-orange sunset colors. That is because the angle of the sun allows the longer red-orange waves to get to us more directly. Therefor those colors predominate the early morning and late afternoon skies. I hope this helps you understand.

We say the sky is blue because it looks more blue than yellow.
I'd rather have a green sky, green being such a restful colour!

the suns rays hit the earths atmosphere, where the light is scattered by nitrogen and oxygen molecules in the air. the blue wavelengths is affected more than red and green appear at sunset the sunlight passes farther through the atmosphere, deflecting and decreasing the blue in the air. scattering by dust particles and pollution the air causes the sunset to appear red.

It is the way the atmosphere refracts the light and it hits on the blue spectrum (although sunsets are particularily orange and red)
