I think it will be OK for your baby to be around the cat. I was around cats most of my life and it never had a negative effects on me. As long as your baby is not exhibiting signs of a cat allergy I think you are safe.

Science/medicine just doesn't support the idea of creating a sterile envirnment for healthy babies or adults. Studies have concluded that children who are regularly exposed to animals (even farm animals) develop healthier immune systems, thus live longer, healthier lives then children who do not have this regular exposure. Living in a germ-free environment is, first - nearly impossible, and secondly, will not evolve the human race in a desease-resistant direction. We need to be exposed to germs and so on in order to build resistance to them (vaccines are a good example).
We have 2 cats and they shed all over - it does indeed create more work to keep the furniture and clothing free of hair - but as you have most likely already read, there are ways to reduce the hair and dander, etc. The love we receive in return is priceless.
Again - it is not recommended to try to create a sterile environemnt for your newborn - this is not the way s/he will develop a healthy immune system, so my advice would be to keep the cat of course and see how it goes - barring extreme allergies - I'm sure you'll be happy you did.

No, cat hair is not bad for baby. It probably is better for baby to grow up in a household that loves and cares for animals as well as human children. It helps baby to develop a healthy immune system to have animals living in the same environment by developing antibodies to protect the child's overall health. Just check with your doctor for the justification and that should set your mind at ease.

You've got to be careful 'cause you really don't know if he's allergic or not yet. Even if he is a really cool and mellow cat, he probably doesn't enjoy having fur yanked out so BE CAREFUL! One warning swat and it could really hurt your baby. Cat hair isn't really bad but don't let him put it in his mouth and I'd really for your baby and your poor kitty's sake, discourage the pulling of fur. He also might do it to the wrong animal like someone's dog and really get badly hurt. How old is he? Is he old enough to understand "no"? Show him how to nicely pet the kitty and say "Good kitty, Pet the kitty" and when he goes to yank pull his hand away and say "no" and take him away for a while. Personally, I'm against babies and toddlers hanging out with pets. Animals also lick their privates and eat god know's what and do you want them licking your baby? Think about it, it's kind of yucky!

No, cat hair is not dangerous. I have grown with cats, they used to sleep with me in bed since I was very little and I'm just fine.

My 17 mth old is always around cats and has her favorite cat, Maisie who puts up so much, i wouldn't worry about it, some people over react when the read an article in some paper or magazine, if your cat doesn't mind, relax

I grew up around dozens of cats, and I'm fine. *twitch*

No seriously, it's not bad for him.

It'll be worse for your kid to not have animals around - he'll more than likely grow up allergic to them if they're not around.
