G'day,
Unfortunately you did not mention where do you come from. The reason is b'cos it is winter in Oz and it's going to be quite cold if you come from tropical countries. However if you come from a 4 seasons countries, you will have no problem at all, since winter in Oz is mild compare with northern atmosphere winter.
If you do not mind the cold weather, then my suggestion will be Victoria and Tasmania since there are terrific sightseeing sites you can visit. I have included some tourism weblinks from respective state governments for you to browse. It may also be cheaper since not many tourists come during the period, except the ski areas in Victoria.
If you on to warmer sites, Central Australia, Western Australia and Queensland will be the places to go.
Have fun and welcome to Australia. Hope you will enjoy it.

What about Central Australia. Uluru and Kata Tjuta National Park are spectacular that time of year as the weather is quite nice and not too hot and the scenery and wildlife are just amazing. Kings canyon is a day trip away from Yulara Resort which is where you will be staying if you decide to stay overnight. The resort is run by voyages look them up on the internet for accomodation options. Only downside is that it can be expensive that time of year as it is peak tourist season. However, good oppourtunity for the family to spend time together. Central Australia is truly magical.

Hi Grant, I'm a Victorian bloke cooped up in an OR each and every day. We popped off to the Goldcoast a few holidays back and stayed nearest Cavil ave as we could for the nightlife and beautiful beach "not to mention the babes lol" anyway I love big powerful jetski's and I found a mob over at Mariners cove that had just! the thing. Boy Howdy!!!!! These things had some grunt, I think they where about 1400cc 4 stokes "near brand new" you head out for I reckon 3hrs when you've only paid for 2 - all the way out to Nth Stradbroke Island - around Stingray Island but you weave your way through some of the most breathtaking mangroves "all at flat Knacker speeds" you stop off at Tipplers Island for a drink and a bite to eat- feed the Walabies, maybe swap drivers if ya have a passenger(70km round trip) "mate" I can't get enough of these guys. All I think about now is going back, I really don't know how they do it for so cheap with the cost of the ski's and maintenance- not to mention fuel!!! Highly recommened adrenaline kick at a cheap price. Thanks Grant, if you or anybody wants info let me know and I would be happy to write back- Marty Bendigo

For a family holiday I would advise somewhere in Queensland. You will avoid alot of backpackers if you don't go to Cairns. I would go to either the Sunshine coast, north of Brisbane{sea calm like the med} or the gold coast to the south{sea wild like atlantic, very high waves and excellent surfing, easy to lose swimsuit though from force of waves}. Noosa is a nice place on the sunshine coast. There are lots of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks inland on both stretches of coast. Again north of Brisbane has nicer scenery.

Basically anywhere outside of the metropolitan areas, especially all of WA.
Don't forget that you would be coming here in our winter and that many places that you might otherwise think of as tourist destinations would be closed for the off season.
We have so many wonderful places here in Australia, too many to go into on a site like this, so use the internet and visit the huge number of Australian tourist sites available to plan your holiday

I would reccomend Broome Western Australia for sure. July/August is it's peak period as it is just beautiful.
I guess it depends where you are coming from though? If you are coming from far away you might like to see more then just one town... in my opinion you can't go wrong with most places on the coast of WA especially with a family the only prob is that it is a plane flight away from the other states

July/August is winter in Australia. I would recommend Port Douglas a comfortable drive north of Cairns (International Airport). Access to Great Barrier reef by hydrofoil. Swimming good at that time of year (no jellyfish). Not too big. Range of accommodation to suit requirements/budget. Trip from Cairns to Atherton Tablelands if you can.

Hi, I think the Northern Territory may be the best place. It's summer all year round. Also while Darwin offers some city comforts the main attraction is the wildlife and the incredible natural beauty of the National parks. Please be sure you have travel visas. You can get them on http://www.eta-visas.co.uk/
cheers, Michael

Come and stay with me and my family!!
Even though it will be winter, the weather is still quite warm. I can take you bush walking, four wheel driving over the beach, we live very close to vineyards, and we live right on the beach (water sports?). We are also close to Sydney and I would be happy to take you there.
This is no joke. Let me know if you want more details
