That's usually from something you did the day before, because your muscles don't tighten-up until you stop moving.
Sometimes, a hot bath that loosens muscles, then some gentle stretching can make that feel a lot better. If you still feel stiff, or the stiffness returns in the evening, try sleeping with a therma-care. (disposable heat wrap)
Advil is also a good OTC anti-inflammatory.
If it doesn't feel better in a week, call your doctor.

Well if it's not the mattress, perhaps you're just sleeping in a bad position. Or maybe someone is breaking into your home and hitting you in the back with something while you're asleep.

How do you know it is not the mattress? That would be my first guess. Second, I would think you are not sleeping in a proper form or perhaps your pillows are affecting you.

you don't move around enough in your sleep and staying in one position for whatever amount you sleep will cause your back to be stiff.
