They are the identification for each aircraft flying around. Without flight numbers you wouldnt be able to tell which aircraft if from what airline and where its travelling to. So its just a tag identification.

their just codes that airlines pick to specify a flight. for example instead of calling a newyork to paris at 8:00 pm in a boeing 747 they just call it flight 329. Isn't that easier?

They are mearly ways to communicate the flight paths of the airplanes...

They are just ID numbers so airports know who is coming and going.

its like the planes name the ATC use it to talk to them
