Honestly, I would try a chiropractor and yoga. From what I have experienced, you should try to stay away from physical therapists. They are usually all about building up muscles in one area to take the load of muscles in other areas. In my experience with lower back pain, this has been a bad thing, because it causes my muscles to be more tense. This might not apply to you, if you don't have alot of muscle spasms. The chiropractor put my back in line and the yoga helped to ease the muscle spasms because the muscles were getting stretched out and would relax afterwords. Seriously, consider the yoga, it will help. It is more than goofy new age stuff, like some people think. Depending on how bad your pain is, you might need to talk to your doctor about, some sort of pain medication until the chiropractor and yoga instructor can get your pain to a manageable point. Hope you get some relief, because I know what you are going through and it sucks really bad. What ever you do, don't let it go cause it can lead to all kinda things that can ruin your life, like depression.

If you think a muscle rub will work, I have just the thing for you to try. I do not know what causes the back pain or if it related to the muscle, but it wouldn't hurt to try this stuff. I have numerous family and friends that have been made believers in herbal remedies just from trying this. It can be made into an alcohol-based liniment for arthritis pain (using wintergreen rubbing alcohol). Add olive oil and it becomes a rub for deep massaging achy muscles and joints. It helped me with a knee pain and my uncle's arthritic hands. Every time my grandmother complains of her lower back or shoulders hurting, I rub some on. My uncle loved it so much, he bought a pound each of the herbs to make it himself! You can buy the herbs already mixed and just add the wintergreen alcohol and the olive oil (optional).
The ingredients: Arnica flowers, St. John's Wort, Cayenne Pepper
Here is the link to the site. It seems wrong to call it Miracle Herbal Rub, but my friends will tell you that it does work miracles. Then again-God did makes these good things that grow from the earth.......

Yes. Back pain can be treated with Alternative Systems only. There is no medicine in this world to treat it.
There are many reasons of lower back pain depending upon site of pain and other symptoms.
If you are constipated or suffering from acidity, the intestines get inflamed and pain is reflected on concerning nerves on back side.
If there is weakness in spines/slip disc in that portion then also there will be pain. Slip disc causes sciatica pain also.
If you have tensions, worries and hard work then also there will be back pain.
None of these reasons can be treated with medicines hence there is no medicine to treat!
Unless patient is examined or cause is known exact treatment can't be suggested in Alternate Systems also. But Yog can help you lot. Improve your life style and live tension free, you will be again helped lot.

You could try the supplement approach.
Bromelain supplement from a health food shop. Arnica gel if there has been a trauma. Turmeric extract (curcumin active ingredient) is a good one too. Also Boswelia. All are available from large health food shops/stores. For more information I would check out the following link as it is fairly comprehensive. You should however visit your doctor if this has gone on for long or you did sustain some trauma. You need to rule out arthritis or any other medical condition. Is your mattress OK? Check your mattress for lumps and bumps. It needs changing if it is over 10 years old.
Take care, hope you get better soon.

One of the most important things for you to be aware of is; the low back pain is brought about by the unequal muscle tension of the lumbar spine. One side becomes shorter from disuse or has some degree of atrophy. It becomes imperative to accompany your treatments with regular stretching of that shorter muscle and attempt to have some equality returned to that area of the back. One of the more significant factors to bring this condition to its symptomatic status is, more than 50%of the population has an evident short leg. Meaning the spine must adapt to this deficiency and make the necessary adjustments to maintain the head above the feet. You can determine which side is shorter with a simple maneuver of putting the feet together and then closing the eyes. You will have a tendency to want to fall toward the shorter side. This deficiency can be accommodated simply by placing two of dr. Scholl's pads into the shoe of the shorter side. You must remember to stretch the muscles of the shorter side of the lumbar spine daily. Considering 90% of your success depends on what you do, not what the doctor does. He/she, will get you relief but not the recovery of what you have lost over a period of time. A retraining of spinae erector muscles is in order.
