If you look up magnesium deficiency on the Internet I think you will run to the pharmacy... I have suffered from depression and eating disorders since I was 16 (and I am 31 now)...the only thing that really helps is to keep yourself busy...and I mean really busy. That way you don't have time to think! We have too much spare time these days. Looking back 100-200 years ago people were not as depressed...because they did not have time to be..they had to put food on the table for their families and had to do all they could to survive. It was just in the upper classes you would find depression (because they didn't have anything to do..no task in life).
Depression never goes away...it lies dormant...it is something you have to learn to live with just like eating disorders. I hope you will find the strength!
Good luck!

I have bi-polar, and I have done a little experiment on myself, with the help of a very understanding shrink and doctor.... Lowering my meds dramatically, but... at the same time I made a point of generally, with out being too anal, looking at my diet, exercising a little more and seeing a psychologist as well as a shrink, (expensive, i know!) to do more 'talking' and working thru all those silly little issues i have, that when put all together, is a whole lot of crap! *giggle*
Re: the food, i don't like to advertise certain 'diets' etc, but the CSIRO total well being book, i think has really helped. It's less carbs, (not none!) and more protein. And when you do eat carbs, they are ones like brown rice, multigrain bread etc. I'm really surprised how much protein actually fills you up, and stops you from being hungry an hour later, and my mood doesnt swing so much. I can hardly believe how much eating Low GI foods and eating more protein actually works. Not to mention a bit of weightloss there too as it's helped me with my emotional eating habits :)
So far, i've gone a good year now, with just a pinch of mood stabiliser, since i've really looked at what i eat. When I have a bad week, with all the sugar and fast foods, my mood starts to decline. I think doing all this not only helps my body out, but it makes me feel like im doing something positive, and I think that, in itself, makes me feel better. Hope this helps a little. I realise that sometimes people need meds, but it's definetly not the only thing that can help.

Change your diet eliminate sugar and breads and most carbs to start with. all fake sugars and caffeine. yes vitamins fish oils or flax to clean out your intestines and something like aloe or chloryphyll for your liver or CKLS for colon kidney liver and spleen. along with the diet change you will be surprised by the differences . Toxins that build up in your body can have a tremendous effect on the brain and how you feel. just make the diet changes and go to your local herb store (not gnc) and get some quality herbs and advice from your situation. eventually you may be able to add in in moderation some of the foods you eliminated once you feel better.

SAMe is excellent for treating depression naturally. It is also very important to eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables, with soybeans and soy products, brown rice and legumes. If your diet is too low in complex carbs your seratonin level can deplete, causing depression.
Ginsing will help as well as boost your energy level.
Maybe you could benefit from a mild body detox, cleanse your body of the toxins that wear you down and make you feel crappy.
There is plenty of info on detox onthe web.

~Fish oil will not help. I don't trust natural remedies or whatever people call them. They aren't approved by the FDA, which means they haven't been tested to work and you would have no idea what they would interact with.
Stick with the medications, you'll eventually find the right one that works for you, it just takes time.
Good luck.~

I don't know why fish oil would help depression. Aerobic exercise would help maybe... that increases endorphins, which the brain makes to help you feel good.
