The answer depends on what you want to do with your hair. Would you like something easy and temporary, or something permanent that will need a tad more upkeep?

Products like Clairol Natural Instincts and Loreal ColorSpa are SEMI PERMANENT colors. They last about 25+ shampoos and will eventually wash out of your hair. You need to pick one that is very close to your natural color right now, or this product will not work. Meaning, if you have brown hair and pick a blonde box, it will do NOTHING. There is only a slight amount of peroxide (if any at all) and will not lighten or change your hair dramatically at all. My mom has dark brown hair and chooses a dark brownish/red color to put red highlights in her hair. It looks great on her, and it doesn't leave those "telltale roots" that you get with permanent color. Her hair is also shiny and healthy looking. You cannot "fry" your hair with this kind of product.

Now, on to PERMANENT color, which is what I use. I use either Loreal Preference or Loreal Excellence Cream. Preference gives you a ton of color choices so this is the easiest one to use to get a good match. Excellence is very mild and is a cream formula so it doesn't drip, but there are not as many color choices to pick from. Either one is good. Remember that you cannot go more than 2 shades different from what you are now. So, if you have dark brown hair and want to go super blonde, it ain't gonna happen! Also, keep in mind that there are COOL, WARM, and NEUTRAL haircolors. Cool means ashy (no red highlights) Warm means reddish/golden highlights, and Neutral is just that - in between Cool and Warm. For examply, I used Golden Blonde on my hair...and I have a golden color that most people would consider a very light strawberry blonde.

Good luck!

I use Light Mountain Organic Henna. (available at health food stores) It's completely organic, no chemicals at all, and very inexpensive (about 6.00 a box.) It's a coating, not a dye, so it doesn't look fake as the color gradually fades. It gives a great amount of shine to my hair, too. The first time you use it, the color is gone in 6 weeks, but if you keep using it, some of the color is absorbed each time, so you can go longer in between uses. (about 10 weeks for me now.)

Some things to know about henna:
1. It's messy!
2. The whole process takes longer than with chemical hair coloring. (about 2 hours for my very long hair.)
3. You have to use a gentle shampoo afterwards or the henna will wash out too quickly.
4. All hennas contain a red tint to them. Don't like red highlights? This is not the method for you, then.
5. With repeated use, the color does not wash out. If you have long hair, this means you will not get back to your original color without using a dye or cutting your hair.
6. I have very coarse, thick hair. Henna is a great conditioner for me. But a friend with very fine, thin hair found henna too harsh and drying for her hair.

Enjoy your new look!

Personally, I prefer the professional lines of Matrix (SoColor and ColorSync) to be the best. They have amazing shades and leave the hair in wonderful condition. I know it's hard for the lay person to get them, but they are easily found on ebay and are used just like the hair color you would find at public beauty supply stores.

If you're nervous about colouring your hair, try Natural Instincts by Clairol. It lasts about 24 shampoos. I love it, I find it works a lot longer than that, and your hair is very shiny after it's coloured.
