Early relationships are based on looks because it's the most obvious way to evaluate a person.
Then people usually, hopefully sooner or later figure out that the value of mere looks only last that far and is only a small part of the whole package.
In school perhaps a better looking person will attract more attention than others, hence more people will like that one. That's not only because of looks, but more a combination of looks and the attention/admiration it produces.
In general however, very few relationships last very long only based on looks. I can't think of any at all actually. People do wake up.

Physical attraction is based on looks. And being physically attracted to each other is an important part of most relationships between men and women.
But physical attraction by itself usually is not enough to make a relationship last.
When people are mistreating each other, then no physical attraction is going to keep them together for long.

Most people start dating because they are physically attracted to each other. I have never had someone call me and say " oh my god! I've met someone and he or she is so ugly!" After you date a few times and start getting to know the person that is when you can truly decide how that person really looks. I have dated gorgeous men and after one date could not figure out why I thought they were so cute. On the other hand I have dated some men that were not the greatest looking, but after getting to know them turned out to be strikingly handsome.

Because physical things are the first thing to attract, when you look at a menu with pictures on it, do you go oh that looks good? Same reason, but you will soon over come that when you are older and realise you like someone for who they are not looks!
